Is Indie music actually dying?

Indie Rock, the type of music that my dad listens to when he is missing his younger years.
Or is it really?

With new rappers aka ''soundcloud rappers'' coming in the way every single day, it's really difficult to have an overview of other popular genres that today's youth likes to listen to. The loss of ''scenes'' and ''cultures'' leaves the older generation wondering: ''What the hell are these kids doing/listening to today?''.

It seems to be, in our growing generation of social media influencers and hypebeast ambassadors, that music has lost it's once true meaning. Music made by some highschoolers in their garage with their dads instruments, beeing all cool drinking a beer and skating afterwards, seems to be dead. After all, this ''aesthetic'' does not approach today's youth at all, since not showering, taking loads of LSD  and living a reckless lifestyle is not today's rule.
We live in a fast meritocracy, in which money dictates pretty much everything and the youth knows that. Therefore, what sells is a luxury lifestyle and that is exactly what rap represents today.

Eventhough, rap is indeed today's music genre, you could argue the disappearance of alternative music, as multiple indie artists are quite on the rise since 2017, which shows that there is still an interest from the community.
Artists like Clairo, with her song ''Pretty Girl'' which has reached over 24 million streams or Boy Pablo with ''Everytime'' (over 15 million streams), not only show that there is indeed a huge interest in indie music but are also helping this genre grow and flourish again. They and other artists, such as Mac Demarco or Yellow Days, have transformed the indie sound and turned into a growing scene and culture.

The indie sound is changing

Many would question this type of indie sound, as it appears to be really mellow to what used to be and makes you feel stoned rather than high, but that change is indeed what is making it approachable today again. Therefore, this new refreshing sound created by these upcoming artists can only good for the community.

In conclusion, rap and mainstream is on the rise and it's going to stay at the highest, but that does not stop our alternative youth to listen to some good indie sounds.
Therefore, no, Indie is not dying eventhough the originial listeners most likely are.
